How to Make Sales Effortless: 3 Keys to Success
Do you ever wish that making sales could feel easier, more natural, and even enjoyable? Many of us have been there — stuck in a cycle of stress, overthinking, and frustration when it comes to selling. But what if I told you that sales can actually be effortless?
This past summer, I unexpectedly had to jump into a new role and the feedback I got was that I make sales seem effortless. Here’s how it all unfolded and what it taught me about approaching sales with ease.
The Unexpected Work That Taught Me About Effortless Sales
It all started in mid-May when my husband's assistant, who has been with him for eight years, went on maternity leave. Around the same time, we had just hired three new staff members and brought a new doctor into the office. Things were already a bit hectic with four new people in the office, but then, a week after she left, two of the new assistants called in sick on the same day. I could see the stress building on my husband's face as he tried to figure out how to handle it all.
I turned to him and asked, “Do you need me to jump in and figure this out?”
He looked at me and said, “Yes, that would really help.”
Now, in the 18 years that he’s been in practice and we’ve been together, I have never stepped into the role of one of his assistants or worked behind the front desk. Sure, I’ve been his Chief Strategy Officer, managed his marketing team, and helped with leadership over the years, but I had never actually been involved in the day-to-day operations. This was all brand new to me.
Thankfully, I had prepared a little. Before our long-term assistant left for maternity leave, I had her record training videos on some of the key tasks in the office so that the newer staff would have something to refer to while she was out. I never expected these were going to become my lifeline. I would sit and watch them, following along step-by-step as I set up new patients in the system and took care of daily tasks. It felt like she was right there with me, guiding me through every process and it was extremely helpful.
Side note: Have your staff put together training videos and standard operating procedures on the things that they do so you are ready when you need to train someone new.
A Surprising Compliment
After what was expected to be a few days turned into a few months of helping out in the office, my husband and I were reflecting on how things had gone, I asked him how he felt about my temporary role in the office.
He said, "I think it went really well. I was confident in your ability to figure things out and knew you were invested in making sure it was right."
Then he said something that caught me off guard: "And you make sales seem effortless."
That comment made me pause. I started to think, "What has made sales effortless for me now?" Sales used to scare me and I didn’t even like to use the word “Sales”. But now it isn’t so daunting and it just feels like a natural process. Reflecting, I realized that three key things have helped me improve my sales skills and make the process flow naturally.
3 Keys to Making Sales Effortless
1. Practice, Practice, Practice
Sales, like anything else, gets easier with practice. Just like I had to quickly learn how to navigate the office systems by watching those training videos, I realized that mastering sales required the same approach.
Practice what you're going to say. Practice handling objections. Practice engaging with your prospects. The more you practice, the more natural and confident you’ll feel during the conversation. And when you feel prepared, the conversation flows more smoothly, and sales become less of a daunting task and more of a natural dialogue.
2. Stop Making It About You
One of the biggest shifts I noticed while working in my husband’s office was how much smoother everything went when I focused on the patients and their needs rather than worrying about how I was doing. The same applies to sales — when you stop worrying about your performance and make the conversation about the other person and their needs, it takes the pressure off of you.
By shifting the focus away from yourself, you create a more genuine connection. Prospects can feel this shift in energy, and it makes them more comfortable and open to the conversation. Remember, sales isn’t about you; it’s about helping your prospects find the solutions they need.
3. Be Clear on the Value
When I think back on my sales journey, one of the most important shifts was becoming crystal clear on the value of what I was offering. Knowing how my product or service could truly help people made it easier to communicate that value.
When you understand and clearly communicate the benefits and outcomes of your offering, it’s easier for your prospect to see why they need it. They’ll be more inclined to move forward with confidence, and you’ll find that your sales conversations flow much more smoothly.
Why These 3 Keys Work
Reflecting on why these three keys have helped me make sales effortless, I realized that it’s all about preparation, focus, and clarity.
When you practice and prepare, you remove the uncertainty that causes stress.
When you make it about the other person, you build trust and rapport. And when you’re clear on the value, you make it easy for prospects to say "yes."
